70th I-Day celebrated with pomp and gaiety at Ampati

Ampati : The 70th Independence Day of the nation was celebrated with much pomp and gaiety at Ampati Students’ field in an elaborate function organized by the South West Garo Hills District administration in collaboration with line departments.

Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Zenith Sangma unfurled the Tricolor and took the Rashtriya Salute while thirty strong marching contingents comprising of the Meghalaya Police, Schools and the Scouts and Guides from various schools performed the march past.  The march past was led by Parade Commander Orville L. Massar, MPS, DSP (Probation) and 2nd Commander Inspector Rufi Ch Sangma.

The VIP, accompanied by Dengnakpara MDC S. Sangma, Boldamgre MDC Stevie M. Marak and South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Cyril V D Diengdoh, also planted tree saplings in the periphery of the stadium to mark the occasion.

The daylong celebration was marked by a colorful and spectacular cultural programme performed by various schools, clubs and NGOs. During the latter part of the day, sports for children where anyone could join in and have fun was organized by the Sports department followed by an exhibition football match between DC XI and Ampati Contractors XI. This was followed by the final match of the Independence Cup Football tournament.

In the evening local rock bands enthralled the audience at a rock concert organized at the venue. The day also marked the end of fortnight-long celebration of “Independence Fortnight 2016” with a series of events spread across the district. (MIPR)
