Ampati : Teachers should not only teach syllabus but rather emphasize on motivating their students to discover their true potential. Stating this at a Career Exhibition South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Cyril V D Diengdoh stressed on the need to inculcate in students values that would bring about the best in them thereby enabling teachers to gauge their potential.
Ten Schools participated in the Career Exhibition organized for Secondary and Higher Secondary School students at Ampati Government Higher Secondary School by the Guidance and Counseling Unit of the Directorate of Educational Research and Training, Shillong. The programme aimed at disseminating career information to students through talks, banner competition and exhibition.
Diengdoh who arrived as the Chief Guest spoke on the need for teachers to motivate their students and enable them to discover their potential. This, he said would facilitate the students to make the right career choices early in life.
Speaking on career choices Diengdoh cautioned the students not to choose a particular profession just because of sheer pressure from peers or relatives but to choose one in accordance with one’s aptitude or interests.
The Deputy Commissioner also requested the DERT to organize a workshop in collaboration with the district administration to teach teachers counselings in order to motivate students discover their potential.
DERT Lecturer and Programme Coordinator S Ch Marak during her keynote address stated that it was imperative for students to make career choices early in life to maintain a goal. She urged teachers to focus on child education rather than concentrating on finishing the syllabus. Self discovery should be encouraged she affirmed and urged the students to set a goal and move towards it unflinchingly.
Later the Deputy Commissioner inaugurated the career exhibits and handed out participation certificates to all the school present at the gathering. He also gave out trophies to winners of the banner writing competition which was held as part of the career exhibition.
