Shillong : The Meghalaya Diabetes Association in collaboration with the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), New Delhi, today organized the Convocation of PHFI’s‘ Certificate Course in Evidence Based Diabetes Management’ (CCEBDM) at the Bharat Scouts and Guides Hall in the city.
The programme was attended by Meghalaya Governor V. Shanmuganathan as Chief Guest.
Also in attendance at the programme were J.N. Chaudhary (IPS Retd), Vice President, Operations & Co-ordination, PHFI, Dr. Daljit Singh Sethi, President of Meghalaya Diabetes Association, MD Hope Clinic and Faculty CCEBDM, Dr. Mihir Saikia, renowned Diabetologist and National Expert, CCEBDM, Dr. Paul L. Dkhar, SMO, Nazareth Hospital, Shillong and General Secretary Meghalaya Diabetes Association . The programme also witnessed the attendance of over 200 doctors, general practitioners, bureaucrats, policy makers and distinguished citizens from North East India.
A total of 24 Convocation Certificates were handed over to the successful doctors by the Governor who also inaugurated the website of the Meghalaya Diabetes Association on the occasion.
During the course of the programme, the Governor actively interacted with the doctors and physicians present by eliciting their views and opinions on diabetes, the ways and means to control its prevalence and also the remedy to help cure and curb this life style disease. He also lauded in appreciation, the services of all those hands involved in reducing diabetes related cases.
The programme assumes significance considering the fact that India has the second largest Diabetic Population at 61 million, next only to China which has 90 million people with diabetes as of 2011. Going by the current trends, India’s diabetic population is expected to cross the 130 million mark by 2030, as against 87 million as earlier expected. (MIPR)
