Shillong : A Special Cover and Stamp to commemorate the recently held 65th Plenary Meet of the North Eastern Council (NEC) was released by Meghalaya Governor V. Shanmuganathan at a function held at Raj Bhawan in the city today.
The Special Cover and Stamp was brought out by the Department of Posts, Government of India with the Cover carrying the symbolic image of the scenic beauty of the North Eastern States and a Stamp carrying the image of all the Eight North Eastern states moving together. The colours used in the Special Cover and Stamp is done keeping in mind the agrarian society and social belief and harmony in North East India.
The Governor on the occasion also handed over cheques to the 24 winners of the ‘North East Leads the Way Run’ organised by the NEC on the 27th May 2016 on the sidelines of its 65th Plenary Session. It may be recalled that the Marathon, flagged off by Union Minister of State independent charge DONER, Dr. Jitendra Singh witnessed enthusiastic participation of the young and old alike in both the 5 Km Short Run and 10 Km Run.
Addressing those gathered on the occasion, the Governor lauded the NEC fraternity for the success of its 65th Plenary Meet which was graced by Prime Minister Narenda Modi, who also took time to visit two of the more prominent tourist spots of the state, namely the Elephant Falls, Upper Shillong and the Heritage Village, Mawphlang prior to his departure from Shillong on the 28th May 2016 . He also expressed his happiness over the fact of how the Prime Minister’s visit has created a positive impact on the tourism sector of the state, with potential tourists wanting to visit the state of Meghalaya to have a feel of its culture and tradition.
While congratulating the victorious runners, the Governor urged upon them to strive towards scaling higher goals on the national and international platforms and emphasised that running, in addition to football can be the sport of focus in the state of Meghalaya.
The programme was also attended by Meghalaya Chief Secretary K.S. Kropha, IAS, Additional Chief Secretaries Hector Marwein, IAS and P.S. Thangkhiew, IAS, Principal Secretary M.S. Rao, IAS, NEC Secretary Ram Muivah, and Director Department of Posts, Shillong , Som Kamei. (MIPR)
