Shillong : The Quasquicentennial Jubilee Celebration themed ‘Great is Thy Faithfulness’ of K.J.P. Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Shillong, was inaugurated today at the school premises by Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma who graced the celebration as the Chief Guest while Home Minister, Roshan Warjri attended the function as the Guest of Honor.
Speaking to a gathering of students, past students, retired teachers and headmistresses and parents, Dr Mukul Sangma expressed happiness to be a part of the celebrations of a premier institution in the state that is exclusively dedicated to the girl child to equip them with knowledge and enlightenment. He said that such milestones in life give us an opportunity to look back and acknowledge the blessings of the almighty that through the missionaries the light of knowledge was brought into the state.
The Chief Minister also said that in a matrilineal society distinctive to the state of Meghalaya it is only befitting to have such a school to empower women. He stated that though the state is confronted with a lot of challenges and constraints it is the endeavor of the government to meet the expectations and aspirations of the younger generation. He also stressed that there is a need for schools and colleges to look at how the positive energy of the youth can be directed and diversified which can provide them sustainable livelihood. He urged the teachers to give the students the necessary hand-holding to enable them to make the right career choices. He also added that the human development programmes funded by Asian Development Bank will not only upgrade infrastructures but also upscale and reinforce the skills of teachers.
Guest of Honor, Minister, Home, Roshan Warjri in her address said that the school is set up on strong principles of love, peace and brotherhood and the scriptures. She said that the school has been instrumental in the making and evolving of the community through the education of womenfolk, adding that though the challenges in the modern world are complex and intricate the sound principles of the school can be emulated to make a difference.
The K.J.P. Girls’ Higher Secondary School was established in 1892 by the Welsh Missionary Society with the lone purpose of educating the girl child. The school has produced many distinguished women personalities and the school is shouldered by the K.J.P. Synod as the sponsoring body. The school also has a morning section from classes VI-X and Higher Secondary section in Arts and Commerce.
The students of the school presented colorful folk dances and melodious songs of the Khasis, Jaintias and the Garos.
Earlier, Rev (Dr) H. Rymbai led the gathering in prayer while H. Mawroh, Principal of the school delivered the welcome address. Among others present were, D. D. Lapang, Chief Advisor to the Government of Meghalaya, R. V. Lyngdoh, Government Chief Whip and officials from the education department.
