Waste management and maintenance of cleanliness programme launched

Shillong: Celebrating the 151st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and in alignment with Government of India’s vision and mission of Swach Bharat, the project for Waste Management and Maintenance of Cleanliness in Khyndailad was today launched by the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, Ms. Isawanda Laloo in a function held at the office premise of MUDA, Police Bazar. Also present on the occasion, were Director of Urban Affairs, Shri. G Kharmawphlang who graced the function as the Guest of Honour and Shri. B S Sohliya, Secretary Meghalaya Urban Development Authority, Shillong and CEO, Shillong Municipal Board.

The programme was organised by Meghalaya Urban Development Authority in collaboration with the Shillong Municipal Board and the office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills, with the participation of Police Bazar Welfare Group.

The aim of the Waste Management and Maintenance of Cleanliness project in Khyndailad which will be facilitated by the Shillong Municipal Board is to create a model area with best practices in waste management through segregation and storage of waste at source and proper disposal in collection vehicles. The project also aims to control littering and dumping through voluntary monitoring by the shopkeepers and residents.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Isawanda Laloo lauded the vision of the Shillong Municipal Board in creating a long term sustainable plan to ensure the cleanliness of the heart of the city, Police Bazar. Adding that it was the duty of all stakeholders to maintain its aesthetic beauty, she called upon the joint cooperation of all to ensure that the goals of the Waste Management and Maintenance of Cleanliness of Khyndialad, is achieved. Applauding the hard work and selfless duty of the Municipal workers who have been in the frontline of the Covid -19 pandemic, Ms. Laloo said that the pandemic is a forceful reminder of how we need to live our lives keeping in mind public health and safety, for which cleanliness has a major role to play.

On the day, 40 hand sanitizer dispensing machines were handed over to the Synjuk ki Nongshynshar Shnong ka Bri u Hynñiewtrep by the Rotary Club Shilong and 4000 masks and 4000 gloves were handed to the Shillong Municipal Board by Round Table Shillong on behalf of Round Table India and Ladies Circle India.

Shri. Jivat Vaswani, owner of Jiva Veg Restaurant was also felicitated for his contribution towards maintenance and cleanliness of Khyndia Lad, Shillong.
