Shillong : The Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association (MCTA) organized the 11th R.R. Thomas Memorial Inter-College Debate Competition on the motion “Swacch Bharat Abhiyan is a catalyst for a cleaner India” on Wednesday at the Conference Hall, Shillong College, Shillong.
Prof H. Lamin, Pro Vice-Chancellor, NEHU was the Chief Guest. In his address Lamin lauded the MCTA for organizing this memorial Debate to honour an academician of the state who was the Principal of Cotton College during 1945-46 and had contributed to promoting education in the north eastern region.
He also stressed on the importance of self reliance in terms of production and stated that NEHU is contemplating to promote education aiming at self reliance in the state and the region.
Mrs E. Basaiawmoit, Former HOD of the Education Department, St. Mary’s College and grand daughter of Prof. Thomas enlightened the young students about Prof. Thomas and his contribution to the society.
Former MLA Manas Chaudhuri who chaired the debate as Speaker urged the MCTA to start a Debating Society to encourage and promote debating culture which is declining in the state especially amongst the youth. He also encouraged the young participants to participate in such academic activities which will mould their personality and help them become informed citizens.
Regional Director, IGNOU, Shillong, Dr A.S. Guha, Prof. Lakhan Kma, NEHU , NSS Coordinator and Dr. V. Laloo, District MCH Officer, West Jaintia Hills were the judges. All together, there were 12 participants representing 6 Colleges.
Rosabel Marngar (St. Anthony’s) was adjudged as the Best Debater, Kamesh Gareri (Sankerdev College) won the second best speaker prize and the Humorous speaker prize was also awarded to Kamesh Gareri (Sankerdev College). St. Anthony’s College was declared the Champion team while St Mary’s were the Runners up team.
